A
taxing question: Paper or plastic?
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/183041_papered.html
I’m
sorry but taxing plastic grocery bags is a very bad idea.
I
have a cleaning service and my plastic grocery bags get used three times before disposal: the first time with groceries from
the store, the second time I put a batch of freshly laundered cleaning cloths in it, and the third time is when I use it for
the dirty cleaning cloths.
Some
of my clients are thrifty and re-use their plastic grocery for trash, sometimes they are used as luggage, and a lot are used
at thrift stores. Most of us see the ubiquitous plastic grocery bag as
a very useful item.
If
a customer brings a used plastic bag back to the store they risk having the bag break and their groceries damaged or destroyed
and there is also the risk of a bag breaking and canned goods injuring someone.
One
can smugly say that every shopper can bring their own re-usable shopping bags when they shop for groceries but the reality
is that not all shoppers can or will do that.
I
would really like folks to stop finding evil little ways to tax small luxuries like a designer cuppa joe or the plastic grocery
bag. It isn’t becoming.
